While we love bringing you a good portion of high school news and updates, we also want to feature some of the state’s top athletes. Today, we feature Dayton two-way athlete Xavier Frank.

After advancing all the way to 4A state final game against Sulphur Springs last season, many wondered about the future of the Dayton football team. While a large part of last year’s production was in the hands of two star players, the cupboard was far from bare in the Broncos’ organization.

So for a player like Xavier Frank, making plenty of plays is one of his responsibilities for 2009. He put many of those on display this past week as the Broncos handled Kingwood Park 48-12v last Saturday at Humble ISD Turner Stadium.

“I think I could have done much better, but I did score a touchdown,” Frank said of his performance last Saturday. “this win is big for us because a lot of people said we weren’t as good as we were last year. So we came out here and gave it our all.”

With the win, Dayton is now 2-1 on the year and has been getting good productive numbers on both sides of the ball. For Frank, there are not many times he leaves the field. Cornerback, wide receiver and return specialist are some of the duties Frank has to handle on a weekly basis.

In the game against Kingwood, Frank had 4 catches for 59 yards and caught a 20-yard touchdown pass. On defense, he was in on several tackles and had an interception.

But not all of the pressure is on him to make the plays. On offense, Payton Ploch runs the offense and has the ability to make plays with his arms or legs and controlling the ground game is sophomore running back Jakarai Delasbour.

So from Frank’s standpoint, where are the Broncos lacking.

“This team brings a lot to the table. We have Payton (Ploch), Jakarai (Delasbour )and Gamal (Fowler), who is only a sophomore,” Frank said. “He has the best hands on the team. Right now we are just trying to throw here, run here and make it happen. We feel like every year we get better so we feel like we are going all the way (to state) and win it.”

As for Frank on the individual level, he stated that he is currently being recruited by Houston and Baylor, but does not hold an offer at the moment.

Dayton will line up again this Friday against Goose Creek Memorial at 7 p.m.
