Deion Sanders Jr., son of the former NFL star, has committed to SMU, the player announced Tuesday.

The spirit of Prime Time is returning to Dallas.

Deion Sanders Jr. -- son of former NFL star Deion Sanders -- committed to SMU on Tuesday, the younger Sanders announced on Twitter.

"Did my time at prep school," Sanders tweeted. "Now I can say I am committed to SMU (Southern Methodist University) to play receiver!"

Sanders Jr. was seen on the SMU campus Tuesday morning shortly before the tweet. He reportedly received an offer that morning and accepted immediately.

Sanders Jr. played for Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. As a senior in 2011, he saw his first snaps at cornerback after playing exclusively on the offensive side of the ball up to that point in his high school career.

His solid play as a senior earned him an invite to play corner in the Under Armour All-American Bowl, which featured some of the most elite players in the country.

His size -- between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-9, depending on the report -- has been a concern, but he showed competitive speed and athleticism in the All-American Bowl.

After high school, Sanders Jr. opted to attend Atlanta Sports Academy to improve his college options without burning NCAA eligibility.

The elder Deion, whose flashy style of play earned him the nickname Prime Time, played 14 seasons in the NFL, five of them with the Dallas Cowboys. He was an eight-time All-Pro selection and was inducted into the both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame in 2011. He also played Major League Baseball for parts of 10 seasons.

"(I'm) so proud of @deionsandersjr accepting a scholarship to SMU," Deion Sr. tweeted Tuesday. "I get to watch him mature as a man, student and athlete right here in Dallas."

The Mustangs' coaching situation likely played a role in Sanders Jr.'s decision. SMU head coach June Jones was offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons in the early 1990's, when Deion Sr. played there.

Coming out of high school, Deion Jr. was rated as a three-star recruit on Scout.com. He is the 24th commitment in SMU's 2013 class, six of which are rated three stars or better.
